Differential Assembly

Removal

1. Raise and support vehicle. On models with electronic locking differential, turn ignition switch ON. Place electronic locking differential control switch to the ON position to lock rear differential. Verify differential is locked by rotating tires. Turn ignition switch off. Disconnect negative battery terminal. Disconnect electronic locking differential electrical connectors and hose from actuator. On all models, drain differential gear oil.

2. Remove rear drive shaft. See DRIVE SHAFT . Remove rear axle shafts. See REAR AXLE SHAFT & BEARING .

3. Remove nuts, and remove differential carrier assembly. Remove and discard gasket.

Installation

1. To install, reverse removal procedure. Use NEW gaskets. Ensure reference marks on drive shaft are aligned. Tighten nuts and bolts to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .

2. Fill differential with gear oil. Ensure breather plug at end of breather tube, located inside left frame, is not damaged or worn. On models with electronic locking differential, ensure lock hose is inserted into actuator to a depth of 0.59" (15.0 mm). Check electronic locking differential operation.
