The translate ECU receives engine revolution speed signals (NEO signal) from ECM.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Check for open and short circuit in harness and connector between terminal NEO of translate ECU and terminal NEO of ECM (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

NG: Repair or replace harness and connector.

OK: Go to next step.

2. Check voltage between terminal NEO of translate ECU and body ground.

PREPARATION:

Remove the translate ECU with connectors being connected. CHECK:

a. Turn the ignition switch ON.

b. Measure the voltage between terminal NEO of the translate ECU and the body ground under the engine conditions below.

NG: Check and replace ECM.

OK: Check and replace translate ECU.

If the same code is still indicated after the DTC is deleted, check the contact condition of each connection.

DTC 53: ECM COMMUNICATION CIRCUIT MALFUNCTION CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION

This circuit is used to send TRAC & VSC control information from the translate ECU to the ECM (TRC+, TRC-) and engine control information from the ECM to the translate ECU (ENG+, ENG-).

When any of the following 1. through 3. is detected at IG1

voltage of 8.5 V or more and engine speed of 500 rpm or

more:

1. Signal cannot be received continuously for 5 sec. or more.

2. Condition that signal cannot be received from ECM at least once within 5 sec. occurs 10 times or more within 60 sec

3. Condition that signal cannot be sent to ECM at least once within 5 sec, occurs 10 times or more within 60 sec.

INSPECTION PROCEDURE

1. Check for open and short circuit in harness and connector between each of terminals ENG+, ENG-, TRC+ and TRC- of translate ECU and ECM (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

NG: Repair or replace harness or connector.

OK: Go to next step.

2. Check voltage between terminal IG1 and body ground of translate ECU and ECM (See PARTS LOCATION ).

NG: Repair or replace harness or connector.

OK: Go to next step.

3. Check for open circuit in harness and connector between terminal GND of translate ECU and ECM and body ground (See HOW TO USE THE DIAGNOSTIC CHART AND INSPECTION PROCEDURE ).

NG: Repair or replace harness or connector. Tighten the ground bolt. OK: Go to next step.

4. Check translate ECU communication.

REFERENCE: INSPECTION USING OSCILLOSCOPE

PREPARATION:

b. Connect the oscilloscope to each of the terminals TRC+ and GND of the translate ECU harness side connector.
