DESCRIPTION

Axle shafts transfer power from transaxle or differential to driving wheels. All axle shafts consist of a shaft with flexible Constant Velocity (CV) joints at each end. Inner CV joint is bolted or splined to transaxle or differential. Outer CV joint is splined to hub assembly and secured by axle shaft nut.

The inner CV joint is a plunging tripod joint. The plunging action allows for axle shaft length change as suspension moves up and down.

The inner and outer CV joints are enclosed by a CV joint boot. The boot maintains lubrication in the joint and prevents contamination of lubricant. Boots must be replaced if leaking or cracked. The inner CV joint can be repaired. The outer CV joint must be replaced as an assembly.

TROUBLE SHOOTING

NOTE: See DRIVE AXLE NOISE DIAGNOSIS in GENERAL INFORMATION.

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION

REMOVAL

1. Raise and support vehicle.

2. Remove front wheels.

3. Remove lower engine covers.

4. Drain differential oil.

5. Remove cotter pin and lock cap. Apply brakes, and remove lock nut.

6. Remove cotter pin and nut, and separate lower ball joint from suspension arm.

7. Using a plastic hammer, disengage drive shaft from axle hub.

8. Push steering knuckle outward and remove driveshaft. Be careful not to damage oil seal, boots or dust seal. Remove snap ring from inboard shaft. See Fig. 1 .

9. Remove shock absorber lower nut and washer. Pry down on lower suspension arm and remove bolt.

10. Remove 3 nuts from upper shock absorber bearing plate studs and remove shock absorber.

11. Using brass drift and hammer, tap on right side drive shaft inner joint to separate from differential. See Fig. 2 .

12. Slide axle shaft toward steering knuckle until free of differential assembly. Use care not to damage oil seal, axle shaft, boots or Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) speed sensor rotor (if equipped). Remove right side axle shaft.

13. Using Remover Tool (09520-01010), remove left side axle shaft. See Fig. 2 Remove snap ring from inboard joint shaft with screwdriver. Be careful not to damage dust cover and oil seal.
